The compost loo

Interior of compost loo in the yurt field

Most people expect the worst when they hear the words “Compost Loo”, but there really is nothing to be worried about and our loo is a world away from the sledge filled smelly affairs you may have come across, or a simple hole in the ground.

Our loo is cleaned twice a day and really does not smell. Even on hot days. This is achieved through the simple process of separation which is why there are two seats!!!

One is for liquid, one is for solid. It’s that simple and the signs on the wall tell you which is for which. Keeping these two elements apart prevents any nasty smells from being created. All that’s required is a bit of forethought to make sure you use the correct seat.

Wash basin in yurt field looThere are a few rules of course, as follows:

All toilet roll must go down the solids chamber. NEVER put toilet roll, sawdust or anything other than liquid down the liquid chamber.

After using the solids chambers throw a scoop of sawdust down.

Always close the lids after use.

Make sure the light is off before leaving.

Thank you.
